Which church do you belong to?

At the end of one of yesterday's services one man came up to me. He told me that he is often asked by people what church he belongs to. "Oh, they expect me to say, Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist...something like that. But I always tell them: I belong to the church of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven (Hebrews 12:23). That really changes the emphasis! I belong with the saints in heaven." His face lit up as he pointed out the verse in his Bible.

That is a pretty good reply isn't it, when people want labels!

To Michael and Adam,

I think both of you are right and wrong. Jesus is the Son of the living God and that only true God is the Father. The Father is the Most High. (John 14:28) Psalms 83:18 tells us that the Most High is YHWH, Yahweh/Jehovah.

However, the Son did have a pre-human existence and certainly was with the Father, was alongside his Father. (John 17:5) The Son positively did see his Father which no other man could claim. (John 6:46) Adam rejects this thinking the Son was just "a thought or plan" of God.

One thing that is often overlooked is that Jesus had a God. There is always someone who is God to him. (Ephesians 1:17; Revelation 3:12) Not just when he was a man but even after his glorious resurrection to heaven where he sits at His God and Father's right hand.

Jesus is given a high position but not the Most High. He is superior over all but with the exception of his Father who is Supreme. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28) He is mighty but not Almighty.

Respectfully,
